Puerto Escondido offers bus, taxi, shuttle, and boat transportation along the coast. It’s impossible to beat traveling in a private vehicle when it comes to convenience and flexibility. Rent a car today.

Not everyone should rent a car in Mexico.

We present a post on how to decide if it is best to rent a car. Once you have read this, you will confirm that you love renting a car on their Mexico trips. Read on to find out why.

What Makes Puerto Escondido a Great Place to Rent a Car?

Comfy and convenient

In the event of a day trip, there are other modes of transportation, but a car is quicker and more comfortable.

To get to an out-of-town beach like Roca Blanca (60 kilometers from Puerto Escondido), you would have to take a van on Highway 200.

Then you would have to get a taxi at the beach entrance (or take a long walk in the sun).

You will need a car to get around, check out the market, and do the basics if you are renting one of the luxury villas on the coast outside of Puerto Escondido as it’s not connected to the public transportation system.

Independence and freedom

There are a number of ways to get around on the coast of Oaxaca Mexico – buses, vans, taxis, and colectivos (shared vehicles); however, renting a car in Puerto Escondido and Huatulco is the best option for North Americans used to go wherever they want when they want.

The first time you visit Puerto, maybe you take the adventure careless and rely on taxis for transportation. But it is possible to feel as though you are a teenager again if you rent a car.

Should you take a taxi or rent a car?

Taxis are always available, and they are very reasonably priced, so many people take them.

There are downsides, like many cabs having no seatbelts in good working order, no air conditioning, and drivers on their phones when they should be driving.

Also, they drive fast.

When you rent a car, you’ll have air conditioning if you need it.

If you need a washroom along the way or want to see sights along the way, you can stop along the way.

The seat belt will work.

Enjoy Exploring More Destinations

Car ownership does cost a bit more but offers the flexibility of stopping in multiple spots in town as well as the possibility to explore the many interesting towns along Oaxaca’s coastline and those in the nearby Sierra Madre Sur mountains.

The rental cars you rent can be driven to Huatulco, Mazunte, Zipolite, and other destinations.

The Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando designed an oceanfront building where Casa Wabi operates as a non-profit arts foundation.

You can’t have it there without independent transportation, if not impossible. By renting a car, you would be able to visit this unique museum.

Don’t worry about the hassles

When you rent a car on your day out, you can also avoid problems.

The value of being able to travel independently becomes clear if you’ve ever watched several mini-vans zip by without stopping because they are already packed.

The Best Way to Rent a Car

Rental Car Zicatela, Los Tres Reyes (The Three Kings), Escondido Car Rental, and other car rental agencies are all available in Puerto Escondido.

They can provide you with quotes. In addition to having English-speaking staff, 24-hour assistance, and airport pick-up and drop-off, Los Tres Reyes Car Rental also has a location on Highway 200 near Zicatela Beach.

The Los Tres Reyes car rental agency also provides services in Huatulco and Oaxaca City, besides Puerto Escondido.

The Discover Cars website provides information about the types of cars available, the driving license requirements, tips for saving money on your rental car, and online booking.

Arrangements for pick-up and drop-off

In case you’re departing through Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), you may drop off your rental car there.

Security checks you at the airport entrance as you pay to enter.

Afterward, park in a regular lot.

Within the small terminal building, Los Tres Reyes is located next to the security clearance entrance. There is no staff on-site, however, you can call.

Paperwork will be required

Most car rental transactions in Mexico are conducted on paper.

To rent a car at Los Tres Reyes Highway 200 and then return it at the airport or vice versa, you need to let them know ahead of time so the paperwork can be sent to the correct location.

Car Rental Requirements

  • License to drive
  • An official passport
  • Credit Card for Deposit
  • There is a minimum age requirement
  • Mexican insurance

Ask for insurance when you rent a car

The policies you have in the United States won’t cover you in Mexico.

No credit card options or your own car insurance, which can waive collision, comprehensive, and personal injury coverage.

The Mexican legal system recognizes and accepts auto insurance coverage offered only by insurance companies licensed in Mexico.

In the event of a serious accident where you are not adequately insured, you could go to jail and incur high costs.

It is crucial to make sure that the quote you receive from the car rental in Puerto to rent a car is an all-inclusive fee which includes the rental, an accident/personal injury policy, liability insurance, and any applicable taxes.

For car theft or accidents, a deposit and deductible are required. A lower deductible can be requested when you request a quote.

Please inspect your vehicle thoroughly when picking it up to make sure there are no pre-existing damages.

We will give you an example based on real-life quotes:

There is no limit to the kilometers.

No matter what type of rental car you pick up, you can require a security deposit of $10,000 pesos, and everything is charged to your credit card. If the unit is delivered in the same condition as when it was rented, the deposit will be refunded.

The comprehensive coverage is already included in the rent price; in case the car is stolen, the driver is responsible for covering a deductible of 20% of the value of the car. Negotiating in advance can reduce it to 10%.

Rental fees include mandatory third-party liability insurance.

Expenses related to medical care for occupants.

Legal fees.

Material damage is not covered by Comprehensive Coverage Insurance.

Accidents

There are still many drivers in Mexico without insurance, since the law on carrying insurance only just became effective. You are advised to collect as much money from the other driver as you can if you are involved in an accident that is clearly not your fault.

A vacationer is unlikely to win a dispute if any doubt exists or even if it isn’t his or her fault.

Puerto Escondido and Huatulco Car Rental Costs

You will be charged according to how long you rent a car. Renting a compact car for a day for around $1500 MXN (about $79 USD) would be reasonable.

Longer rental periods, however, result in a lower price. In high season, you can rent the same car for a month for $700 MXN ($37 USD).

Expenses for fuel

When compared to the relative costs of food and gas in Canada and the United States, gas in Mexico is surprisingly expensive given the relative economic status of most Mexicans.

There aren’t that many gas stations. The only way to pay is with cash. When you don’t know where the next open gas station is, it’s a good idea to fill up often and not let the tank decline below half.

Unfortunately, especially on highways, you have to make sure that the pump price is set to “0” so that the cost doesn’t begin with the last charge. Keep an eye on the vehicle.

We can recommend a small tip to the attendants since they usually offer full service, including washing the windows.

Driving Safety Tips

When you first rent a car, drive during the day.

Find out where all the speed bumps, potholes, and open drains are along Highway 200, along with other main roads.

Unlike in Canada and the United States, topes (pronounced “toh-pehs”) are often unmarked and higher than in Canada. As such, they should be approached slowly or at an angle.

Check the road for crossing animals or animals sleeping there.

It is possible for protests and roadblocks to occur at any time in Oaxaca. If necessary, postpone your road trip and exercise patience.
