1. History of Puerto Escondido
Although there is not much data on the origin of this city, the oldest information comes from a legend attributed to the pirate Andrew Drake, brother of Francis Drake (invader of the port of Santa María de Huatulco). Andrew was an English privateer who lived in the s. XVI (1543-1596) who had kidnapped a young Mixtec native woman, whom he held captive in her cabin for weeks.
The pirate brothers anchor on a secret beach near the Colotepec River, and it is here that the girl escapes, hiding in the jungle. She was never found, for this reason she was nicknamed “La Escondida”, a name that she later also named the Bahía de la Escondida or Principal.
Starting in 1930, Puerto Escondido developed as a commercial terminal, attracting thousands of tourists in 1960 with the construction of the highway that linked Acapulco with Oaxaca. And from there it has only grown and grown until it has become this great paradisiacal destination.
