Extreme adventures in Puerto Escondido: Sport Fishing Adrenaline
Whether you want to fish from the beach or you would like to join a fishing charter for a full-day, Puerto Escondido is renowned for being one of the best fishing spots in Oaxaca.
When it comes to fishing from the beach and rocks, there are a number of great little spots where you can catch a lot of fish if you don’t have the budget to take you offshore.
- Coast Walk
From Playa Principal to Playa Manzanillo, there is a coastal path that runs all the way around the headland and almost all the way down to the beach. This is a great land-based fishing spot where a lot of locals fish.
In the latter case, it’s highly recommended that you don’t use a sinker when casting the bait out, so it sinks slowly.
Chingabal’e
Located around the La Punta headland, Chingabal’e is a beautiful little rock you can climb that is a perfect place for climbing too. Depending on the tide, you can fish off the rocks just like the locals do.
Please take caution if you decide to fish off the rocks from here since it can be a little dangerous. There is a great time to fish here. It’s usually around sunset when you can see pelicans hunting bait balls.
- La Barra
You can cast a line straight off the beach at La Barra, which is a really popular fishing spot for the Puerto Escondido locals. It is common for some of the locals to use nets to fish in this area, however, some of them may also use handlines or rods to catch their fish.
The best place to go fishing is near the mouth of the river where connects to the ocean. It is normal for the mouth of the river to shift depending on the time of year, but it is always a good place to fish because the fish in the ocean will be looking for an easy meal flowing out of the river.
Take care when exploring or fishing in La Barra as there are crocodiles there.
